The UK rejected the bill for £40.8 billion for leaving the EU

The British government will not pay the European Union £40.8 billion, which Brussels called the “final estimate” of costs after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union. This was announced on July 9 by a representative of the Office of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“We do not recognize this amount. These are the assessments of the European Union that they have made for their internal reporting purposes, " he said.

The named amount was published in the EU reports for 2020, and after that, officials in Brussels said that they expected payments to begin this year. London, in turn, insists that the amount should be less by about £5 billion less.

“Our estimate remains in the average range of £35 to £39 billion pounds, and we will publish the full information in parliament soon,” a British government spokesman said.

Earlier it was reported that during the Brexit negotiations, the UK agreed to pay the EU a sum of money that will cover pension contributions for EU employees, as well as funding for three EU research programs from 2021 to 27.

But the European Union will also have to return to the UK the money invested in the European Investment Bank (a little more than £3 billion) and the European Central Bank (about £50 million).
