Senators from the Democratic Party of the United States are going to present a new package of sanctions that will be introduced in the event of an escalation of tensions on the border with Ukraine, The Washington Post reports.
"Putin does not need to bring down his own economy and sacrifice the lives of his people in a future attempt to redraw the map of Europe," Senator Robert Menendez explained the purpose of the document.
The exact measures have not yet been disclosed, but it is known that the sanctions will be directed at Russian officials from government and military circles, including the Russian leader personally. They will affect the banking sector and the SWIFT system.
According to the publication, the White House intends to support this bill.
Earlier, The New York Times reported that the US Department of Commerce may adopt a resolution that will actually prohibit the export to Russia of consumer goods that use electronics manufactured or developed in their country. This will be one of the retaliatory measures in the event of an invasion of Ukraine.
Commenting on reports of sanctions, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that the US threats of new sanctions against Russia are a kind of artillery preparation before consultations on security guarantees.
