The tsunami on the island of Hanga, which followed the eruption of the volcano, was caught on video

The Kingdom of Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean was hit by a tsunami after a volcanic eruption. The Network got footage of water rolling onto the shore of Hanga Island, reaching roads and buildings on the coast.

The eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano began on January 14. The plume of gas, smoke, and ash reached a height of 20 km. Soon, ash-covered the capital of the country — the city of Nuku'alofa, 65 km north of the volcano.

According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, tsunami waves reached 82 cm. They were observed not only in Tonga but also on the territory of American Samoa. No casualties have been reported.

A tsunami warning was also issued in New Zealand and Fiji.
