Russian hackers involved in SolarWinds' massive cyberespionage campaign hacked the email accounts of some of America's most prominent federal prosecutors in 2020.
This was announced by the US Department of Justice, writes AP.
This is 80% of Microsoft email accounts used by employees of four US law firms in New York. According to the department, in total, hackers have hacked the accounts of at least one employee in 27 offices of the prosecutor's office.
The US Department of Justice suggests that the hacker attacks were carried out from May to the end of December 2020. It was during this period, in mid-December, that an attack on SolarWinds software was identified — then dozens of American private sector companies, analytical companies, and at least nine US government agencies were attacked.
All victims of the attack on prosecution offices have received reports and are working to reduce “operational, security and privacy risks.” The Ministry of Justice did not provide additional details, in particular, what information the attackers could obtain and how the hacking could affect the current processes.
