The US has promised a collective response to Iran over the attack on the Mercer Street tanker

The United States, in close coordination with the United Kingdom, Israel, and Romania, is preparing a collective response to Iran for the attack on the Mercer Street tanker. This was announced on Monday, August 2, by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

“We are in very close contact with the UK, Israel, Romania, and other countries. There will be a collective response, “ the Daily Mail quotes Blinken.

We are talking about an incident that occurred on the night of July 29-30. Then a chemical tanker was attacked in the Arabian Sea about 280 km from the coast of Oman. The ship was traveling without cargo from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to the Arabian port of Fujairah. As a result of the attack, the citizens of Great Britain and Romania were killed.

Mercer Street is owned by a Japanese shipowner and sails under the flag of Liberia. The company operating the Zodiac Maritime vessel, owned by Israeli entrepreneur Eyal Ofer, initially reported that it could be a pirate attack, but the Maritime Trade Organization of the United Kingdom (UKMTO) classifies the incident as not related to piracy.

After the incident, a number of Western countries, including the United Kingdom, accused Iran of involvement in the attack. The head of the British Foreign Ministry, Dominic Raab, noted that London is working with international partners on a coordinated response to Tehran for the attack on the tanker.

On July 30, it became known that the attack was probably carried out with the help of a drone.

Blinken on August 1 expressed confidence in Iran's involvement in the attack on the tanker. In a message distributed by the press service of the US State Department, it is noted that there is no justification for a deadly attack on a ship, and the corresponding military actions pose a threat to freedom of navigation, trade, and specialists who work on ships.

On August 2, the Tasnim news agency reported that the adviser to the British ambassador in Tehran was summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry after Raab voiced accusations about the involvement of the Iranian side in the attack on the tanker. Iran categorically denies the accusations.
