Taliban warns the U.S. against interference in Afghanistan

The radical Taliban movement warned the U.S. against interfering in Afghanistan's affairs, an official spokesman for the movement's political office said.

It became known Saturday that U.S. B-52 Stratofortress bombers carried out airstrikes against Taliban forces* in the provincial capital of Jawzjan Shiberghan. According to Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Fawad Aman, the attack killed more than 200 Taliban and destroyed more than 100 vehicles, large quantities of weapons, and ammunition.

“We warn against American intervention in Afghanistan,” a spokesman for the Taliban political office told Al Jazeera television, noting that “there is no cease-fire agreement in Afghanistan.”

According to the representative of the Taliban office, the Taliban government itself is to blame for what is happening in Afghanistan, and it “started the war in some provinces.” According to him, the Taliban actions are only “a reaction to attacks” on the part of the military.

Earlier on Sunday, the Taliban claimed to control Kunduz and Sari Pul provinces; the Afghan authorities denied those claims. The militants also said they had taken the city of Taloqan, the administrative center of Takhar province in the northeast of the country.

The standoff between government forces and the Taliban has been ongoing for years in Afghanistan. In recent months, the Taliban have seized significant territories in rural and border areas and have launched an offensive against major cities.

Washington and the Taliban signed the first peace agreement in more than 18 years of war in Doha in 2020. It provides for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan in 14 months and the beginning of an intra-Afghan dialogue after the exchange of prisoners. However, these talks have not yet progressed beyond a few “kick-off” meetings.
