Scientists find reduced intelligence in those born during the COVID-19 pandemic
Scientists from Brown University in Rhode Island (USA) have conducted a study and found that babies born during the coronavirus pandemic have a reduced level of intelligence, compared to children born earlier. This is reported by the Daily Mail.
Experts have found that such children may have lower IQs due to lower levels of social interaction amid the restrictions imposed during the pandemic. As the researchers pointed out, children interact less with the outside world, which leads to “shockingly” low cognitive development.
Researchers tested 672 Rhode Island children between the ages of three months and three years for IQ. Nearly half of the experiment participants were born before January 2019, and 176 were born between January 2019 and March 2020. Another 188 babies were born in July 2020.
According to the study, the average IQ test score, according to the Mullen Scale for Early Development, for those born during the pandemic was no higher than 78. Children born before the pandemic, from 2011 to 2019, had it at 100. At the same time, experts noted a more serious decrease in this indicator among boys from poor families.
According to the authors of the study, the main factor in the decline of the level of intelligence was the stress of parents during the pandemic, in which they had to work from home. Scientists also noted that masks that adults had to wear because of COVID-19 could also affect children's development. So, children were less able to learn from their parent's facial expressions.
