Bloomberg reveals details of the agreement between the U.S. and Taliban
The flight of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has put an end to agreements between the United States, its allies, and the Taliban, Bloomberg reported, citing sources close to the negotiations.
According to the agency, weeks before power in the country shifted from the government to the Taliban, active negotiations involving the United States began in Doha.
“Representatives of Afghanistan and the Taliban tentatively reached an agreement in which all sides would declare a two-week cease-fire in exchange for the resignation of President Ashraf Ghani and the start of negotiations to establish a transitional government,” the report said.
Under its terms, the ceasefire would allow former President Hamid Karzai and other current and former officials to strike a sort of power-sharing deal with the militant group. It is noted that Karzai remained in Kabul after the Taliban seized power.
However, the possibility of such a development was prevented by the president of Afghanistan's flight from the country, which he himself explained as an attempt to avoid bloodshed. This step, the agency's sources said, surprised his negotiators in Doha, U.S. diplomats, his chief of staff, and other senior aides.
