An antibody has been found that protects against all strains of coronavirus
Specialists of the University of Washington have discovered an antibody that is effective against all strains of SARS-CoV-2. They reported this in an article in the journal Immunity.
Scientists introduced fragments of the coronavirus protein spike into the body of experimental mice. They were able to obtain samples of 43 antibodies from mice that recognize these fragments. In a Petri dish, the scientists tested the ability of these antibodies to protect cell cultures from infection. Then the researchers tested the nine most promising ones on mice.
After that, the scientists selected two antibodies that coped with the task best and tested their effectiveness against alpha, beta, gamma, delta, kappa, and iota-strains of coronavirus, as well as several unnamed ones. One of the antibodies, called SARS2-38, was effective against all strains, including beta, which is resistant to most antibodies.
The researchers also found out which mutation of the protein spike could make the virus resistant to SARS2-38 and found that it is observed only in 0.04% of the 800 thousand studied genetic sequences.
The authors of the work expect that the use of a new antibody will allow to quickly and reliably treat patients with COVID-19, they expect to achieve the best results with the help of combination therapy.
