The EU demands a million euros a day from Poland

The EU Court ruled that Poland is obliged to pay the European bloc 1 million euros in fines every day until it starts working on the reform of its judicial system. This decision was led by the consideration of the case on the independence of the Polish court, writes The Washington Post.

Two days before the court's decision, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki promised that the EU would respond if it unleashed a "third world war" with the Polish state.

"We will defend our rights with any weapon we have at our disposal," he said.

On September 7, the European Commission demanded to impose sanctions against Poland because of judicial reform. Exactly one month later, on October 7, the Polish Constitutional Court recognized the supremacy of constitutional law over European law.

The European authorities are dissatisfied with Poland's alleged encroachment on the independence of the judiciary: the new judicial body created by the current Polish government is believed to restrict court decisions.
