The supreme leader of the Taliban spoke in public for the first time
The supreme leader of the radical Taliban movement, Haibatullah Akhundzada, appeared in public for the first time during his leadership. He spoke to followers, whom he called "brave soldiers and disciples," in the city of Kandahar, located in southern Afghanistan, AFP reports, citing representatives of the movement.
According to the agency, the event was held under strict security measures, and therefore there was no photo and video shooting, but a ten-minute audio recording of Akhundzada's speech appeared on social networks. On the recording, Akhundzada can be heard saying that he prays for the martyrs of the Taliban, wounded fighters, and for the successes of officials involved in the restoration of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. It is clarified that the speech of the Taliban leader was of a religious nature and did not contain political statements
According to AFP, Akhundzadeh was previously elected the spiritual leader of the Taliban, not a military commander, but his public speech may give rise to speculation that he now plans to take a more central role in the leadership of the new government.
Haibatullah Akhundzada has been the spiritual leader of the Islamist movement since 2016, he continued to lead a closed lifestyle even after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August this year.
