Japan to test Apple and Google for compliance with antitrust laws
The Japanese government will examine the activities of Apple and Google for violations of antitrust laws, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper reports, citing sources in the country's leadership.
“In the Japanese market of operating systems (OS), the share of Apple and Google reaches more than 90%. We will study the real situation with deals with manufacturers of mobile phones, tablets, and other devices, " the government said.
If the Japanese government's investigation reveals that Apple and Google are engaging in suspicious activities in the OS market, it could lead to tougher antitrust laws in Japan.
The reason to launch an investigation was reported from Spotify and distributors of electronic and audiobooks. They complained about Apple's compulsion to use only its own in-app purchase system, the App Store and the iTunes Store, as well as other restrictions.
Earlier, the US House of Representatives committee approved a report on Bigtech violations.
