The U.S. and the UK have accused Russia of cyberattacks around the world

The U.S. and UK authorities have said that Russian hackers accused of interfering in the US presidential election in 2016 have attacked hundreds of organizations around the world using VPNs over the past two years. This is reported in a joint report of the special services of the two countries.

According to their data, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of Russia, military unit 26165, was engaged in the attacks. The report does not specify the names of the organizations that were subjected to cyberattacks, it is only known that they were mainly located in the United States and Europe. These include government agencies, political parties, energy companies, law firms, and the media, according to the authors of the report.

The Reuters news agency notes that Unit 26165 first became known to the public in mid-2018 during the investigation of Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller about alleged Russian interference in the 2016 American elections.

Earlier it was reported that the intelligence community of the United States considers Russia and specifically the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU) to be the culprit in several incidents with American civil servants abroad, as a result of which they were allegedly attacked by some “directed energy”.
