The organizers of the contest "Car of the Year in Germany" have chosen the winner. It was the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric hatchback, which entered the market six months ago. The international jury of the award of 20 automotive journalists also determined the best cars in five separate categories: "Compact class", "Premium class", "Luxury", "New Energy" and "Sports Car".
In the compact car of the year category, which includes cars with an initial price of up to 25,000 euros, the winner was the Peugeot 308 hatchback — the first model to receive a new brand logo with a lion's head. The Korean Kia EV6 electric car was named the best premium car (price from 25,000 to 50,000 euros). The main award and the title of "Car of the Year in Germany" were awarded to Hyundai Ioniq 5. The electric hatchback with a retro design uses the E-GMP platform and offers two power plants with one or two electric motors with a capacity of up to 306 horsepower. With an older battery of 72.6 kilowatt-hours, the hatchback drives 480 kilometers without recharging.
The car supports charging from 800-volt terminals with a capacity of up to 350 kilowatts. Five minutes will give an extra 100 kilometers of mileage, and up to 80 percent of the battery will be filled in 18 minutes. The Kia EV6 has the same electrical architecture, which recently set a record for the shortest charging time required to cross the USA.
In the last four years, only electric cars have won the German Car of the Year competition. In 2021, it was a Honda e city car, in 2020 — a Porsche Taycan, and in 2019 — a Jaguar I-Pace crossover.
