EU Council lifts travel restrictions for holders of “vaccination passports”

The EU Council has approved a decision to lift travel restrictions within the bloc for holders of COVID-19 digital certificates.

This is reported by the decision of the EU Council.

“Holders of vaccination certificates issued in accordance with the EU Regulation on digital COVID certificates should not be tested or quarantined/self-isolated if they are fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved by the European Medicines Agency and at least 14 days have passed since the full vaccination. Member States may also remove such restrictions after the first dose in the case of two-dose vaccines, " the statement said.

The restrictions for persons who have a certificate indicating that less than 180 days have passed since the date of a positive test result have also been lifted.

Restrictions for other travelers should be based on the extent to which the country from which they come has taken control of the spread of COVID-19.

The EU is introducing COVID-19 certificates, which will indicate whether a person is vaccinated, or has immunity, because he was previously infected, or recently passed a negative test. The system should be ready by July 1, although some countries have already launched certificates earlier.

Member states will also be able to hit the “emergency brake” and ban all travel from the region that has a spike in the disease.

The system is also designed for use in countries that are not members of the Schengen area — Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, but not for the UK.

Visitors from other countries can also come if they can prove that they are vaccinated. However, border policy, in general, is a matter for individual EU countries, so they can set their own rules.
